Granger Community Church Day 2
Posted by: | Comments- 1:24 PM Jason Petermann - Human. space.
- 1:25 PM Jason Petermann - you have public space… anyone and everyone… your service on the weekend
- 1:25 PM Jason Petermann - social space… people may not know each other, but they have commonality
- 1:27 PM Jason Petermann - social space in a church may be a class offered… like FPU, guys or ladies retreat
- 1:28 PM Jason Petermann - personal space
- 1:28 PM Jason Petermann - people work in the same ministry, meet for Starbucks or a Bible study…
- 1:28 PM Jason Petermann - conversations are moving along throughout these spaces, getting more personal
- 1:29 PM Jason Petermann - Intimate space
- 1:30 PM Jason Petermann - one on one with someone, being very transparent. Knowing the other person has their back…
- 1:32 PM Jason Petermann - We need to move people along in our churches, but there is nothing that we can do to make the intimate happen…
- 1:35 PM Jason Petermann - people will likely only have 5-6 friends that are close enough to get to the intimate level
- 1:37 PM Jason Petermann - We all need each of these four spaces
- 1:37 PM Jason Petermann - we move in and out of these spaces very fluidly…
- 1:39 PM Jason Petermann - Granger’s Spaces
- 1:40 PM Jason Petermann - weekend – Public
- 1:40 PM Jason Petermann - First Wednesday (mid-week) – public
- 1:41 PM Jason Petermann - other Wednesdays… Journey Bible classes
- 1:44 PM Jason Petermann - social spaces
- 1:44 PM Jason Petermann - Turning Point
- 1:44 PM Jason Petermann - Starting point
- 1:44 PM Jason Petermann - Second Saturday
- 1:45 PM Jason Petermann - Financial Peace
- 1:46 PM Jason Petermann - table work for a minute or two
- 1:53 PM Jason Petermann - no matter what we may hope for one of these areas of space, people will make it what they want…
- 2:02 PM Jason Petermann - Accept the space that you have
- 2:02 PM Jason Petermann - Leverage the space you ahve
- 2:02 PM Jason Petermann - Design the space that you have
- 2:02 PM Jason Petermann - think like a designer
- 2:03 PM Jason Petermann - We need to ask about our spaces:
- 2:03 PM Jason Petermann - What kind of space is it
- 2:03 PM Jason Petermann - what is the purpose of the space
- 2:03 PM Jason Petermann - who will use that space
- 2:04 PM Jason Petermann - what is the desired experience in that space
- 2:04 PM Jason Petermann - (what do you want them to feel?)
- 2:05 PM Jason Petermann - what do we want people to leave with?
- 2:06 PM Jason Petermann - a friend? a challenge? a new commitment for the week?
- 2:06 PM Jason Petermann - Who is responsible for quality control… who will say we have done what we intended to do with this space
- 2:08 PM Jason Petermann - Minimal. Menu.
- 2:08 PM Jason Petermann - showing a video
- 2:14 PM Jason Petermann - Your people have two menus
- 2:14 PM Jason Petermann - 1. The menu they carry with them
- 2:14 PM Jason Petermann - 2. the menu we hand them when they come into our church
- 2:17 PM Jason Petermann - Recommended book: Paradox of Choice by B. Schwartz
- 2:17 PM Jason Petermann - Stack the menu, pay the price:
- 2:18 PM Jason Petermann - When the menu is too exhaustive, people simply choose not to choose
- 2:19 PM Jason Petermann - When the menu is too exhaustive, people delay their choice
- 2:19 PM Jason Petermann - When the menu is too exhaustive, people experience buyers remorse
- 2:19 PM Jason Petermann - we need to narrow the choices at our choice
- 2:21 PM Jason Petermann - Bulletin: when we hand someone the bulletin for the week, we have handed them our new comers packet
- 2:22 PM Jason Petermann - how do you move people from Sunday to serving if there are no announcements… Granger does “The Feed”
- 2:23 PM Jason Petermann - a video they show this every week
- 2:27 PM Jason Petermann - Minimize the menu: the used car salesman approach
- 2:27 PM Jason Petermann - you wanna move the car off the lot and will do anything to move it,no matter what the customer wants
- 2:28 PM Jason Petermann - second approach: All-skate approach
- 2:28 PM Jason Petermann - everyone does everything together
- 2:30 PM Jason Petermann - both approaches do not work and place expectations on people to be and do them, to be at the same X in their journey
- 2:31 PM Jason Petermann - end of session 3, session four starts in 15 minutes!

Granger Community Church Day 2
Posted by: | Comments- 11:27 AM Jason Petermann - People. Change.
- 11:28 AM Jason Petermann - There is a difference between being responsible to people and being responsible for people…
- 11:28 AM Jason Petermann - we are responsible TO people…
- 11:29 AM Jason Petermann - if we understand that are are responsible TO people, then I understand they have a choice… if I feel responsible for people, I think I should choose for them
- 11:30 AM Jason Petermann - if we understand that are are responsible TO people, then I know they must figure out their next tep… if I feel responsible for people, I think I should tell them what there next step is
- 11:31 AM Jason Petermann - if we understand that are are responsible TO people, then I understand they must bear the consequences of their actions… if I feel responsible for people, I assume the guilt, or worse yet the shame for them
- 11:33 AM Jason Petermann - if we understand that are are responsible TO people, then I share their journeys, offering encouragement and teaching… if I feel responsible for people, I try to direct their journeys, never allowing them to wrestle or mess up
- 11:39 AM Jason Petermann - if we understand that are are responsible TO people, then I talk to God a lot on their behalf… if I feel responsible for people, I tend to talk to people a lot on God’s behalf… WOW!
- 11:42 AM Jason Petermann - “If Jesus trusts the Holy Spirit, maybe we should too”
- 11:42 AM Jason Petermann - It is God that does the growing, we just get in the way…
- 11:43 AM Jason Petermann - Real. Expectations.
- 11:45 AM Jason Petermann - Only one thing fills the gap between expectation and unmet expectation: disappointment
- 11:45 AM Jason Petermann - we need to be clear about what people expect from us…
- 11:46 AM Jason Petermann - get clear
- 11:46 AM Jason Petermann - be real about it…
- 11:46 AM Jason Petermann - we need to call people to own their journeys… if we do that, we better own our own journey
- 11:46 AM Jason Petermann - everyone has a next step
- 11:47 AM Jason Petermann - Be simple.
- 11:48 AM Jason Petermann - We make things WAY to complicated for other people (need to get Kem Meyers book on March 26)
- 11:49 AM Jason Petermann - people will give their lives away to serving
- 11:50 AM Jason Petermann - we have to find a way to make everything that we do in the church to connect to the idea of people being on their journey
- 11:54 AM Jason Petermann - Story. Telling.
- 11:54 AM Jason Petermann - Kathy Guy is joining mark now
- 11:54 AM Jason Petermann - The power of story…
- 11:55 AM Jason Petermann - when we here the stories of people, we realize we are not alone
- 12:01 PM Jason Petermann - showing a video about how no one is alone in the struggles of life… very real and raw stuff
- 12:06 PM Jason Petermann - when we here the stories of people, we realize my story matters to someone else
- 12:07 PM Jason Petermann - when we here the stories of people, we realize that other people’s stories matter too
- 12:10 PM Jason Petermann - when we here the stories of people, we realize that my story connects with God’s story and stories of others around me
- 12:14 PM Jason Petermann - Story telling requires space for people
- 12:14 PM Jason Petermann - space for them to tell their story
- 12:15 PM Jason Petermann - churches need to be the best at creating spaces for people to tell their stories. The church should be better at that than Starbucks and the bar
- 12:15 PM Jason Petermann - unfortunately, people find more acceptance in those places than the church… (shame on us…)
- 12:15 PM Jason Petermann - our church should not be a haven for Christians, but for the people that Christians are suppose to love…
- 12:17 PM Jason Petermann - table sharing now…
- 12:27 PM Jason Petermann - That is the end of session 3. We will be back after lunch for Session 3 (about 1:15 EST)

Granger Community Church Day 2
Posted by: | Comments- 9:48 AM Jason Petermann - Some introductions of people to start the session
- 9:51 AM Jason Petermann - First Impressions – to make someone feel like they belong when they first visit
- 9:52 AM Jason Petermann - Lasting Impressions… how to get someone to come back…
- 9:53 AM Jason Petermann - Mark is explaining how he came to Granger, and how he felt about the place. The DNA just fit
- 9:55 AM Jason Petermann - Questions we often ask about our returning guests:
- 9:55 AM Jason Petermann - How do we get people to join our church?
- 9:56 AM Jason Petermann - What curriculm?
- 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - What if we first asked… what are people generally looking for?
- 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - why do people come the first time?
- 9:57 AM Jason Petermann - what might want to make people stay
- 9:58 AM Jason Petermann - what are we trying to do?
- 9:59 AM Jason Petermann - a lot of times, we rush things for people… we can make their journey awkward…
- 9:59 AM Jason Petermann - showing a video…
- 10:05 AM Jason Petermann - this is a great video… got do this one
- 10:07 AM Jason Petermann - I wonder if sometimes we don’t escalate our expectations so fast that we make them feel awkward…
- 10:10 AM Jason Petermann - table talk time…
- 10:11 AM Jason Petermann - questions being asked are: “What do you believe motivates people to come back a second and third time?”
- 10:12 AM Jason Petermann - needs being met, relationships, finding other people that are like them…
- 10:13 AM Jason Petermann - Why do you want guests to come back? what do you hope motivates them?
- 10:13 AM Jason Petermann - needs being met, relationships desired and developed
- 10:14 AM Jason Petermann - lots of discussion in the room about these questions now
- 10:15 AM Jason Petermann - People Matter
- 10:16 AM Jason Petermann - People like to hide…
- 10:16 AM Jason Petermann - we started that at a young age… peek-a-boo and hide and seek
- 10:17 AM Jason Petermann - it is cute when you are young, but not when you get older
- 10:19 AM Jason Petermann - big challenge is that we say that we will accept someone… when…
- 10:19 AM Jason Petermann - when we do not feel accepted or like we belong, we hide
- 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - our job is to create an enviroment that we accept them right where they are… right now… even after a week, 6 weeks, 6 months
- 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - it does not matter how long it takes someone…
- 10:20 AM Jason Petermann - we put a time-line on people, and that can be unrealistic
- 10:21 AM Jason Petermann - What do you want a person’s life to look like after being around your church for… 2-3 weeks, 2-3 months, 2-3 years?
- 10:21 AM Jason Petermann - when speaking of matuity and life change, the Bible uses “grow” language
- 10:22 AM Jason Petermann - we think we can a little miracle grow on people and they will spring up overnight… the Bible talks nothing of that
- 10:23 AM Jason Petermann - Romans 1:11 – “For I long to visit you so I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow strong in the Lord.”
- 10:25 AM Jason Petermann - ven in life, growth takes time
- 10:25 AM Jason Petermann - a baby is not mature… neither is a 3-4 year old, or a 16yr old… or a 35 year old
- 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - as we look over our own shoulder, we can see our growth process
- 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - if we are in a process, why shouldn’t those in the church be in a process
- 10:26 AM Jason Petermann - Not New
- 10:27 AM Jason Petermann - How long does it take before someone is not new…
- 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - discussions about that now in the room…
- 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - everyone likes that “new” treatment
- 10:31 AM Jason Petermann - we have to continue to communicate value
- 10:32 AM Jason Petermann - What doesn’t change: 1. Intrinsic value
- 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - people are always valuable
- 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 2. the need for respect does not change
- 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 3. Only one “you are here” X
- 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - (x – where you are in your journey)
- 10:33 AM Jason Petermann - 4. Life is about journey
- 10:34 AM Jason Petermann - it is important to remember that we are where we are… and that is not a problem. We are in a journey
- 10:34 AM Jason Petermann - video of Mark Beeson talking about the “X”
- 10:39 AM Jason Petermann - wow, great video illustrating a journey…
- 10:39 AM Jason Petermann - 5. God’s grace does not change because we are not new
- 10:43 AM Jason Petermann - we want people to belong, God’s grace makes that possible
- 10:44 AM Jason Petermann - Manychurches make it harder to join them than Jesus did to follow Him… ouch! Very true of many churches though! wow!
- 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - Membership. Assimilation. Belonging.
- 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - Invite people to something bigger than themselves
- 10:47 AM Jason Petermann - we should invite people to the movement of Jesus Christ
- 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite people to the movement instead of joining our church
- 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - What if we invite them to relationship, not a list of rules
- 10:48 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite them to a partnership, not merely a covenant
- 10:50 AM Jason Petermann - partnership communicates everyone carrying their part of the load…
- 10:50 AM Jason Petermann - another video with Mark Beeson…
- 10:51 AM Jason Petermann - Mark Beeson is a master at casting vision… wow!
- 10:52 AM Jason Petermann - what if we invite people to belong to something they want to be a part of
- 10:53 AM Jason Petermann - taking questions from the floor now…
- 10:57 AM Jason Petermann - the words recruit and assimilate put bulls-eyes on peoples backs
- 10:58 AM Jason Petermann - the whole tone that needs to be communicated is “You are on your journey, it is yours.. whatever steps you take are up to you…”
- 10:59 AM Jason Petermann - end of session 1… back for session 2 in about 15 minutes…

Granger Community Church Workshops
Posted by: | Comments- 2:46 PM Jason Petermann - Session 4 about to start in 10 minutes…
- 2:54 PM Jason Petermann - a little Q & A for now…
- 2:57 PM Jason Petermann - Granger does a Voluntour every 6 weeks.
- 2:58 PM Jason Petermann - Voluntour gives people the opportunity to see different ministries to see where they might be interested
- 3:04 PM Jason Petermann - now, on to training
- 3:04 PM Jason Petermann - uses the acronym “hello”
- 3:04 PM Jason Petermann - H – Hello
- 3:06 PM Jason Petermann - people needed to be acknowledged quickly and genuinely
- 3:07 PM Jason Petermann - It is awkward for someone to walk in and no one say anything to them…
- 3:10 PM Jason Petermann - Read people’s body language to know what they are expecting… to shake hand or not..
- 3:14 PM Jason Petermann - acknowledgment gives worth and value
- 3:15 PM Jason Petermann - a lot of discussion on this point
- 3:18 PM Jason Petermann - e – engage
- 3:19 PM Jason Petermann - when you engage, you drop everything that you are going
- 3:19 PM Jason Petermann - you need to focus on the individual
- 3:20 PM Jason Petermann - when you do not keep eye contact, it communicates that other things are more important…
- 3:22 PM Jason Petermann - our team needs to realize they are there for other people, that has to be their focus
- 3:24 PM Jason Petermann - we want people to develop community while serving, but they also need to keep guests priority
- 3:24 PM Jason Petermann - l – listen
- 3:25 PM Jason Petermann - make eye contact
- 3:25 PM Jason Petermann - l – listen some more
- 3:25 PM Jason Petermann - REALLY listen!
- 3:28 PM Jason Petermann - Listening may mean that we need to ask some questions to help them
- 3:30 PM Jason Petermann - o – offer assitance
- 3:34 PM Jason Petermann - escort people, do not point
- 3:34 PM Jason Petermann - find out where the kids need to go (want to go)
- 3:36 PM Jason Petermann - if a team member cannot escort, they need to hand-off
- 3:36 PM Jason Petermann - a hand-off is a great way to introduce a guest to other people
- 3:51 PM Jason Petermann - Mark is finishing up… with a video
- 3:56 PM Jason Petermann - great video of someone who experienced life-change because of the First Impressions team… what a story!
- 3:56 PM Jason Petermann - end of session 4!
- 3:56 PM Jason Petermann - Will be blogging Lasting Impressions tomorrow!
